A cruise ship equipment malfunction incident could have resulted in several injuries, but luckily no one was hurt. Crystal Symphony, a luxury cruise ship owned and operated by Crystal Cruises, was delayed for nearly a day after the vessel suffered a propulsion malfunction that required significant repairs. The ship had been scheduled to depart Montreal on October 22, but left the next day at around 6 pm. Though no cruise injuries were reported, passengers must not have been too content after the ship skipped a scheduled call in Quebec City.
According to a Crystal Symphony cruise passenger who recounted the incident on Cruise Critic, parts were flown in for the repairs, which took an entire day to be finalized.
“We are still in Montreal, some 12 hours after we were supposed to leave. Two announcements indicate a ‘propulsion issue,’” wrote the Cruise Critic member, known as Tyler919.
Jason Guerrero, a spokesman for Crystal Cruises, told Cruise Critic that the ship experienced a “software issue related to the port side propulsion system.” He added that engineers were deployed to fix the issue and then the ship set sail toward the next scheduled port of call on the itinerary, Halifax. Crystal provided passengers with shuttle transportation so they could make the most of their time in Montreal as the repairs were performed.
Although no one was injured as the repairs took place, accidents aboard cruise ships occur more frequently than anyone can imagine.
